From 2018 there have been 3 choirs at King's, each offering something different, but all choirs enabling the boys to extend their singing abilities and offering them an opportunity to work within a group to enhance their musical, creative and expressive abilities.

ACafellas attracts students from all year levels to form a dynamic singing ensemble. It is an auditioned choir for boys ‘who really take singing seriously’. Under the directorship of Kris White and Jo Dryden, ACafellas works towards the annual 'Big Sing' competition for regional and national choirs.  Boys from all year levels make up this impressive line-up of talented vocalists.

The choir has successfully competed in the ‘Big Sing Festival,’ winning several awards over the years and for the last 2 years has received commended for their overall performance.

ACafellas members rehearse regularly, requiring each student to attend a 2 rehearsals each week. The rehearsals are focused, fun and valuable for establishing a unified sound and performance.

King's of the Pacific

2018 saw the beginning of a new choir at King's. After the enthusiasm shown for Polyfest in 2017 we wanted to continue to develop and enjoy the musical talents of these young men so in term one of 2018 we formed King's of the Pacific Choir. We took nearly 30 boys to the Town Hall Stage for The Big Sing and we received wonderful comments form the adjudicator. In his sum up he wrote " I think this a choir that really could be a force to be reckoned with if you want ". We accept that challenge.

Polyhymnia is a combined King’s and Queen’s chamber choir directed by Ms Dryden (King’s) and Ms Irvine (Queen’s).   The group was set up in 2016 at the behest of the students who wanted to have the opportunity to perform in a mixed choir as well as tackle some more challenging music.

Rehearsing twice weekly, Polyhymnia has provided polished performances of songs ranging from classical to contemporary styles at a variety of local events and concerts each year. Highlights over the last couple of years have been winning the People’s Choice Award and ‘highly commended’ awards at Otago ‘Big Sing’ and performing at the ‘First Church’.
