Singing

ACafellas Elite Choir

For the past seven years, King’s has attracted students from all year levels to form a dynamic singing ensemble. ACafellas is an auditioned chamber choir for boys ‘who really take singing seriously’. Under the directorship of Jo Dryden, ACafellas is working towards the annual 'Big Sing' competition for regional and national choirs.  Boys from all year levels make up this impressive line-up of talented vocalists.

The choir has successfully competed in the ‘Big Sing Festival,’ winning awards ranging from 'The Peoples Choice' (2014) and the Special Award for the Choir that ‘Most Reflected the Spirit of the Festival’ (2012).  In other Regional Competitions, the Choir has won the Isabel Chetwin Cup for the ‘Most Improved Choir’ and a ‘Commended Award’ for a Contemporary Composition.

The Choir has also showcased at the Dunedin RSA (Returned Services Association) Concert, Dunedin Male Choir Concert and the Secondary Schools’ Music Festival. The choir is also invited to perform at local community events.

King’s Choir members rehearse regularly, requiring each student to attend a sectional rehearsal and full choir rehearsal at least once a week. The rehearsals are focused, fun and valuable for establishing a unified sound and performance.
