Fine and Visual Arts - Level 4

The Fine & Visual Arts Course is a one year, full time, Year 14 course of study in the visual arts, leading to the award of the National Foundation Studies in the Visual Arts. It is a self-contained course of study that may also prepare students for advanced courses, in particular the Bachelor of Fine Arts.

The course aims to develop an advanced understanding of practices which underlie the making and knowing about art and to extend these practices in the development of individual achievement in the visual arts.

Course Entry

Entry is open to all school or mature students who have already established a high degree of commitment and achievement in the visual arts, evident either:

a) By satisfactory completion of one or more courses in Bursary Art at Year 13 level. Where students are currently engaged in such courses, a note of those should be included in their application for entry and a photograph of each panel of bursary folios should be included, or,

b) Through submission of photographs of at least 12 examples of their artwork, at least six of which must be drawings. These submissions should be enclosed with entry applications.

Course Structure

This is a broad based course, aiming to introduce students to a range of art activities and processes, while encouraging in-depth study in some areas of practice. All practice is established during class and extended in free study time.

DRAWING

Students will explore a range of existing techniques and methodologies in which drawing is seen as the basis for the analysis and collection of information, personal expression, communication, formal analysis, and pictorial development.

PAINTING, PRINTMAKING, & SCULPTURE

These are separate courses and individual programmes of investigation, pictorial development and resolution in response to given briefs.

ART HISTORY AND THEORY

This course will enable the student to establish personal contexts for making artworks, through the study of art in relation to a cultural, historical, and critical context using formal analysis and interpretation of artworks.

PHOTOGRAPHY

A course for developing competency in darkroom, studio, and camera practice in a fine arts context.

DESIGN

A look at design principles, especially relating to modern design.

CERAMICS

Developing basic skills and techniques in clay.

Special Notes

a) Although this is a tertiary course, your Study right is safe guarded. The fee for 2010 is $400.00 per term for full time students. Part time students fees will be notified at the start of the year but will be approximately $70.00 per subject, per term. This fee covers the cost of all principle materials and equipment. All fees need to be paid by the end of the first week of each term.

b) Twenty hours of tutor contact time will be timetabled between 8:40 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday with free studio time available between timetabled hours.

c) The 2010 course commencement date is the second week of Term 1.
